I teach so my wife and kids will have health care. The idealism and passion I once had for teaching is mostly spent. The current NCLB push to make every child above average is impossible and part of the vast right wing conspiracy’s plan to privatize public education. Better instruction for students at risk and greater school choice are certainly desirable, but if we were serious about not leaving children behind we would declare another War on Poverty, not a war on a tactic or a war on some drugs but not others.
